Robber Bridegroom

Illustration from "The Robber Bridegroom" Oil On Canvas 24" x 15"
My preliminary sketches are below.

The many thumbnails I did to explore the composition. I did some of these in the Manchess workshop. I then elaborated on these when I arrived back home and came up with the final comp.

A new painting after being inspired at the Gregg Manchess Workshop

Scene From The Fisherman's Wife    oil on canvas 14" x 24 "

I attended the Gregg Manchess Workshop  "Plan Great Images From The Ground Up" in Bothell Washington Nov 8-10.
I learned quite a lot about composition and design and I hope my images now will be much stronger if I keep applying what I learned from this fantastic three day workshop.
Gregg Manchess is a fantastic artist and I have been a big fan of his work for many years. Check out the link I provided to his web site if your not familiar with his work.
After pounding my brain with his info about clumping, cropping, overlapping, point of view and more and sketching thumbnails till my fingers turned raw, I think Im seeing the light at least a little bit !
I have always been in such a hurry to get started with the painting, but I learned its better to delay that in order to figure out the most dramatic design to keep the viewers eyeballs clamped to the canvas.

Heres some process images:
Above are some of the thumbnails I  generated for this fairytale idea in the workshop. I did probably 30 to 40 more, most of them pretty uninteresting but I learned a lot from Gregg's critiques and lectures.
Above are the best thumbnails fleshed out a bit more , the four at the bottom I elaborated on after I got back home. Using the principals I learned in the class I shifted my camera view slightly to the right and I think it made a more interesting picture.
Heres my charcoal comprehensive after I shot my reference. I followed Gregg's example and photographed myself as the Fisherman , and I found a little octopus toy and lots of octopus photos that I hope makes the octopus somewhat convincing. I went to the beach as well so I could see the water interacting with rocks which were my octopus stand ins.

Exhibition

La Luz de Jesus Gallery PresentsJune 2012
Dave Lebow's Dexter portraitGreetings!

Dave Lebow
End Time Visions

This Friday, La Luz de Jesus Gallery opens an alarming exhibition from the mind-behind-the-mind of the Doomsday KillerDave Lebow's End Time Visions fills the white room with images of rapture from the greatest television series ever about a serial killer who kills serial killers. The darkly dreaming drama is brought to life on gallery walls, and Dave will be here in person to discuss the work and his process throughout the evening.

End Time Visions opens on Friday, June 1st at 8PM. The opening reception will end at 11PM, and the exhibition will run through July 1st. Contact gallery director Matt Kennedy for purchase or preview information: (323) 666-7667.
Jason D'Aquino
Phillumeny

D'Aquino - Poe bone fragment
Killers play a prominent role in Jason D'Aquino's latest body of work, too. His miniature matchbook masterpieces depict BerkowitzGacyManson and Dahmerwith a measure of detail rare in pieces ten times their size. Working entirely on found surfaces, D'Aquino turns calendars, prescriptions, ledgers and even human bone fragments into canvases of macabre intensity. A pulpy playfulness undercuts Phillumeny with a Chandleresque gallows humor, making Star Wars,Eraserhead and Buster Keaton thematic neighbors -if only for a single exhibition. (6/1-7/1)

Germs
Fasho'

Germs - Suxtapoz
South Los Angeles native Jaime Zacarias aka GERMS is seemingly infected with an innate ability to channel the spirits of our surrealist predecessors, slapping our eyeballs with his grotesque yet amusing iconography and amoeba-like characters while simultaneously referencing post-Chicano culture and imagery. He is known for cleverly stylized Luchador masks given life by their protruding tentacles, surrounded by floating creatures that playfully flirt with their viewers' imaginations. Fasho' is a fresh blend of graffiti technique and old-fashioned, lowbrow sardonique. (6/1-7/1)

D'Aquino LeBow Germs - June 2012

Art in the Hallway
The Art in the Hallway Exhibition is an ever-changing presentation of pop surrealism's best.
When Punk & Glam Were Twins:
The 1980s on the Sunset Strip

CrampSlashBurn-cover
Not everybody made it out the decadent 80s alive or in tact, but for those who did survive, the memories smuggled out in stretch jeans and guitar cases are worth their weight in mascara. This book signing and exhibition is sure to draw many of the people documented in John Scarpati's new book, Cramp Slash & Burn.
June 22 - July 1: opens Friday, June 22; 8-11 pm
Soft Cover: $40.00
Signed Hardcover: $TBA

Check out our events calendar, too.
If you haven't been to the La Luz de Jesus lately, you really haven't been at all.
Sincerely,
